Kaleidoscope 2.0 offers great options for scheme design (5/16/98)

In a chat session with Greg Landweber, Arlo Rose and the Kaleidoscope Evangelist Eric Reid which I attended at gui junky's Hotline server tonight, Greg made some remarks about the new scheme format in Kaleidoscope 2.0.

Schemes for Kaleidoscope 2.0 will be easier to make. There is an initial learning curve, but once you have figured out the new resources, it is quite easy. It gives you a lot of flexibility, but for the best results, you should design the windows in a graphics program, not the ResEdit editor. Basically, you paste in a complete image of a window and then specify which parts correspond to what (close boxes, etc.) and what needs to be stretched. Widgets (close, zoom and windowshade boxes) and window titles can be placed anywhere on the window border, on the top, bottom, or even the sides. The window still needs to be built on a rectangular content region. You cannot have bits of the frame extending inside the window, but you can do most anything you want on the outside of the window.

Each scheme can specify its Finder background colors, as well as separate colors for list views, sort columns, and the divider line in the Finder. You can also set the text color for list views, icon views, and the desktop. Kaleidoscope 2.0 also supports replacement arrow cursors.

Greg will provide a ResEdit patch which will allow you to create cicn resources of any size you want. ResEdit can get confused with extremely large icons, though. Schemes created for Kaleidoscope 1.5 or later will still work with Kaleidoscope 2.0 and there will be no need to convert them to the new scheme format.

Kaleidoscope 2.0 will not include options to add sounds to system events like menu selections etc., but Greg said he had considered adding hooks for other programs to do that, and that he had been working with someone who wanted to release a utility which would add sounds to system events.

Detailed documentation on the new scheme format will be included with the public beta release of Kaleidoscope 2.0.

Design the most useless scheme and win prizes (4/2/98)

Patrick Bores has just announced the Useless Scheme Contest. The contest will run until the end of April, 1998 and is great for those of you who think your scheme is more useless than the next person's scheme. You may not submit Be schemes to this contest, as Patrick believes that no Be scheme is useless. (Does this have anything to do with one of the utilities he is offering as a prize to the winning scheme?)

As an example of a useless scheme, Patrick Bores has made his scheme Zoom Box available for download. Zoom Box is a useless scheme composed of mostly zoom box icons.

The creator of the most useless scheme will win the contest and receive a personalized copy of BeEdit v1.5.1 and WebColor v2.2. His or her scheme will also be featyred at Patricks web page and announced at the Kaleidoscope Scheme List.

The Kaleidoscope Webring is having problems (3/29/98)

The Kaleidoscope WebRing, which was started by Jacob Kaplan a few weeks ago is suffering from some problems. Since his web site, SchemeCentral, has now been removed, there is no description available on how to subscribe to the webring. The graphics used for navigating between the pages in the webring were also stored at SchemeCentral and are also gone. Several of the members of the webring have now removed the HTML code from their webpage, causing the ring to be broken. In a comment, Jacob Kaplan said that the Kaleidoscope Webring was not dead. He still had to figure out the image problem before new members could be added.

Sample Appearance application (3/29/98)

The Appearance test application which we previously emntioned was not the complete application. Quentin Hill, one of the members of the scheme mailing list, recently reported that he had found the complete Appearance application created by Ed Voas. The sample application which comes with the Appearance Development Kit This one has examples of every Appearance control there is and is very useful for testing things like bevel buttons in your color schemes.

The download package is 4.4 Mb (or about 7 Mb uncompressed), but it is definitely worth downloading. It also comes with Appearance version 1.0.2, and information on how to make the Appearance Manager work with systems, starting at System 7.1.

The Kaleidoscope Webring (3/14/98)

Jacob Kaplan at SchemeCentral has started a Kaleidoscope WebRing. A webring is a collection of related sites that each has a piece of HTML code at the bottom that puts a navigational bar at the bottom of their pages. People can then easily browse through sites about their favorite subject; Kaleidoscope in this situation.

If you have a page where you present your Kaleidoscope schemes or utilities, or just a page with general information about Kaleidoscope. you can join this webring by filling out a form at SchemeCentral. Joining the WebRing could increase the number of hits to your webpage.

SchemeChecker 1.2 fixes errors faster (3/14/98)

The SchemeChecker stack started reported that a new version should have been available about a week ago. The new version is now finally released, and can be downloaded from SchemeChecker's info page.

With the help of Giovanni Sarbia, who wrote some new code for fixing misset bits, SchemeChecker now fixes error much faster than earlier versions. This version also allows you to customize the required resource set if you want to check if you have included all the bevel button resources or see what icon resources you can add to your scheme to make it support the icons from the Appearance Manager. This new option is accessed by option-clicking any of the check buttons.

If you are watching the SchemeChecker info page through PageWtach, you may have received a lot of unnecessary reports. A form has now been added to the info page to help you unsubscribe from PageWatch and stop the reports. Version 1.3 of SchemeChecker will offer version checking over an internet connection, which will work much better than PageWatch.

Menu Patch for Designer's Studio updated (11/20/97)

If you find that the resource menus in Designer's Studio are too long, and cluttered, you might want to try Brad Matter's D'Studio Menu Patch. Menu items have been renamed, to put the more generic parts of names first and the more specific last. Divider lines have been added, and some items have been re-ordered.

The patch also fixes two bugs in Designer's Studio, one where a menu item brought up the wrong icon (the File Server menu item was bringing up the Extensions folder), and another where the Extensions folder was missing.

Version 1.2 of the D'Studio Menu Patch fixes a problem which could cause crashes when selecting some of the resources from the menu. It also fixes some spelling errors, makes naming of resources a bit more consistent, and a few more items have been rearranged or placed in groups to make the menus easier to use.

Using Appearance Manager in system 7 (11/20/97)

The question about which folder resources you can add to your schemes in order to provide support for the new icons introduced in macOS 8, has been heavily discussed at the Kaleidoscope mailing list. Not many are aware of this, but it is possible to install the Appearance Manager in system 7. Installing the Appearance Manager when running system 7 will not answer the question on which icons are being used in macOS 8, as no additional folder icons seems to be patched. However, you may open the Appearance Extension in ResEdit and take a look at the icons to get an idea of how they look.

The Appearance Manager 1.0 comes bundled with the beta release of Eudora Pro 4.0, and is automatically installed in your system folder when you install Eudora Pro, regardless of which system version you are using. The Appearance Manager doesn't seem to cause any conflicts when running on system 7.5.

Bugs in D'Studio, SchemeChecker still needed (11/2/97)

Even though Akamai Design's recently released Designer's Studio has only been available for a week, quite a lot of bugs have been reported at the Color Scheme Mailing List. Still, there is no sign of any page discussing the bugs and suggesting possible workarounds at D'Studio's webpage. Dorian Weisel has posted a message to the Mailing List where he says: "We [Akamai Design] are paying attention and working considerably more than overtime to bring all this together." We should look forward to the release of D'Studio 1.1, he says, but another list member pointed out that Akamai Design should consider a version 1.0.1 before they got too worried about version 1.1.

If you have read D'Studio's Read me file, you may have noticed it says: "No longer will you need to use the HyperCard application [SchemeChecker] to insure that all resources are correctly included and set."

Since D'Studio has its own code for checking schemes, you don't need to check schemes created with D'Studio with SchemeChecker, but you may still want to have a copy of SchemeChecker available. As SchemeChecker is a tool for both scheme authors and Kaleidoscope users, you may still need SchemeChecker to insure that any schemes you have recently downloaded and installed are designed correctly.

Designer's Studio, from Akamai Design, is the world's first WYSIWYG Kaleidoscope Color Scheme editor.

New Scheme author mailing started (9/29/97)

Leo Breebart, the maintainer of the current Kaleidoscope mailing list, has recently announced that he will no longer be able to run this list. The list is to go off air in mid-October.

Eric Reid at the Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has now created a new Kaleidoscope mailing list for scheme authors. This list is not intended as a forum to provide feedback to the Kaleidoscope team. Bug reports, suggestions, and comments should be sent directly to the Kaleidoscope team at support@kaleidoscope.net

Subscribing to the Kaleidoscope Scheme List
To subscribe to the new list, send e-mail to:

majordomo@kaleidoscope.net

putting the following line in the body (not subject) of the message:

Majordomo will then send you an automatic response containing information on subscribing and unsubscribing.
